Artist Statement – Keith Turnbull
I try to follow advice given to me by a dear friend, who once said to me “when in doubt, look to the human side”. This philosophy has guided my life as a father and grandfather, as a manager of staff, and as an artist. I believe strongly that the arts represent the heart and soul of a society. My goal is to create figurative sculptures that portray people in all their diversity. Our real heroes are not those that receive riches and awards, but those who modestly work, raise children, create art, share their knowledge and continue the struggle for a human society on the surface of our beautiful planet. There is so much to life that is serious, but this is certainly not the case all of the time. My sculptures may have a serious intent, or they may show the lighter side of everyday life. Thus, my pieces may represent on the one hand a slave in chains, and on the other hand a little girl playing with a ball or a wealthy Spanish couple sunbathing on the beaches of Mexico. Often they simply celebrate the human form. I especially like to work from live models who are representative of the diversity of the population, and who themselves are interesting people who enjoy the creative atmosphere of the sculpture studio. As I develop my art further, I find myself drawn to new mediums such as cement and snow, due in part to the ability to work large, but also because projects tend to be collaborative. My work in these mediums remains primarily figurative.
